Made with a rich and melty homemade Gruyère, this easy vegan fondue is the cheesy recipe you've been waiting for! It's perfect for a dinner party, New Year's celebration, or at-home date night. It's also incredibly simple to make in just 10 minutes.

Why I Love This Vegan Fondue

Satisfies cheesy cravings: While many vegan cheeses leave plenty to be desired, this fondue has the perfect cheesy flavor and texture that make it hard to tell that it's not actually dairy cheese. Even your non-vegan friends and family will love this recipe.

Easy: Once you prep the cheese ahead of time, this fondue is incredibly easy to make and comes together in about 10 minutes.

Fun: This vegan fondue recipe is perfect for a dinner party or holiday gathering. Get everyone around a table and dip in!

Inclusive: Whatever the dietary needs of you and your guests, this recipe can accommodate them. It's naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan, can it be made alcohol-free if you use non-alcoholic wine.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

If you have questions about the ingredients in this recipe, this is the section for you. Feel free to leave a comment if you don't see the answer to your question here. (Note: The full ingredient list with measurements is in the recipe card below.)

garlic: Adds a bit of garlic flavor to the fondue. If you don't have a garlic clove on hand, you can add a dash of garlic powder at the end together with the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.

vegan dry white wine: Since some wines are processed using animal ingredients, you'll want to check the brand on barnivore.com before you purchase your wine. I used chardonnay, but other good options include sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, and reisling. If you want to make this fondue alcohol-free, I'd recommend using a vegan-friendly non-alcoholic wine like Noughty Non-Alcoholic Blanc.

lemon juice: Adds some acidity to the flavor of the fondue. Feel free to increase it, reduce it, or eliminate it based on your taste.

cornstarch: Helps to thicken the fondue. You could also use all-purpose flour instead.

vegan Gruyère cheese: This homemade vegan cheese is the base of the fondue, which gets its savory, nutty flavor from hazelnuts, nutritional yeast, miso, apple cider vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, and mustard powder. The agar agar powder helps the cheese both melt and solidify. While this recipe would work with store-bought vegan cheese, I recommend making this easy blender Gruyère for the most authentic fondue flavor and texture.

nutmeg, salt, and pepper: Add these to taste.

Serving Suggestions

To keep your fondue warm, you can serve your fondue with a fondue set, which should come with a fondue pot, a stand, a burner, and a set of fondue forks or skewers. Light the burner and serve the fondue together with the dipping items of your choice.

If you don't have a fondue set, you can still enjoy your fondue straight out of the pot or saucepan with regular forks. To keep it hot longer, I'd recommend keeping it in a small, well-insulated metal pot or pan instead of transferring it to a bowl.

When you're enjoying fondue with a group, you'll also want a plate and an extra fork for each person. Instead of eating directly from the fondue fork, you can transfer your dipped food to the plate, then use the other fork to eat it.

If you want to turn this fondue into a full meal, here are some more recipes you can try: Start with a salad, like this apple walnut salad. Then serve a main course like vegan baked ziti, lasagna, or lentil loaf with sides like garlic bread or vegan sour cream mashed potatoes. Finish your meal with vegan cannoli, cheesecake, or crème brûlée for dessert.

What to Dip in Vegan Fondue

The more dippers you have for your vegan fondue, the more fun it is for everyone. Here are some popular options.

Items to be dipped in vegan fondue (apples, carrots, gherkins, broccoli, and bread), in individual bowls on a table, labeled.
  • French bread or baguettes, cut into 3/4 inch cubes

  • apple or pear slices

  • mini bell peppers

  • blanched broccoli

  • carrots or celery sticks

  • crackers or chips

  • grapes

  • cherry tomatoes

  • steamed cauliflower

  • sautéed or breaded mushrooms

  • gherkins or other pickled veggies

  • roasted potatoes

Storage and Reheating

This fondue is best served fresh, so make only as much as you'll eat, if possible. However, if you have leftover fondue, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. I don't recommend freezing this fondue.

To reheat, add enough wine to coat the bottom of a small saucepan, then add the leftover fondue. If you have a large amount of fondue left, it will help to use a potato masher to break it into smaller pieces first so it will melt more easily. Turn the heat to medium-low and whisk the fondue and wine constantly until it's melted and smooth.

Vegan Cheese Fondue

Yield2 cups (500 mL), serves 2 to 4

Prep Time2 minutes

Cook Time8 minutes

Total Time10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 3/4 cup vegan dry white wine (I used chardonnay)*
  • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 batch vegan Gruyère cheese, shredded (about 15.5 oz. or 440 g.)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • salt and black pepper, to taste
  • cubed French bread, sliced apples, chopped bell peppers, blanched broccoli florets, carrot sticks, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Before you begin, you’ll want to prepare a batch of vegan Gruyère cheese at least 2 hours ahead of time so it can set. I also recommend cubing your French bread and chopping your fruits and vegetables before you start on the fondue so they’re ready to dip as soon as the fondue is ready.

  2. Rub your peeled garlic clove over the inside surface of a medium pot or saucepan, then discard the clove.

  3. Add the wine, lemon juice, and cornstarch to the pot and whisk well to combine. Then heat the pot over medium-low to medium heat, stirring frequently.

Lemon juice, wine, and cornstarch mixed together in a pot.
  4. When the wine just begins to simmer, whisk in 1/3 of the vegan Gruyere. Continue whisking until all the cheese has melted, then add another 1/3 of the cheese. Once that has completely melted, add the rest of the cheese and keep stirring until everything is smooth and melted.

  5. Season the fondue with nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste (I used 1/8 teaspoon each of nutmeg and pepper, but didn’t add any salt). Transfer the fondue to a fondue pot using a heat-resistant rubber spatula. Light the fondue pot’s burner and serve immediately with cubed bread and any fruits and vegetables you like.

Notes & Hints

To ensure your wine is vegan, check the brand on barnivore.com. To make this recipe alcohol-free, I recommend using a non-alcoholic wine.
